This is bad. Really bad.
I’m sure you already know that myself and LTS are big Fast and Furious fans. I’ve written a few articles about the series so far. It’s a rare thing for a series to get better with age, but FF is one of the exceptions. After Tokyo Drift, I didn’t think there was a future, but after Fast 4, I knew there was hope and after Fast 5, I knew it was #back.
However, the “family” that we have come to know and love is in serious trouble. This all started during the filming of The Fate of the Furious during the “Candy Ass Feud” between The Rock and Vin Diesel.
Apparently, the Rock was pissed at Vin Diesel’s work ethic during filming, which included showing up late to set. I could see the Rock being pissed at this because the man sleeps 2 hours a night to wake up at 4am to work out. If you saw Fast 8, you could tell that the Rock and Vin filmed a lot of scenes separately because they were barely on camera together. However, both said the tension was behind them. Plus, the Fate of the Furious made over a BILLION dollars. Money talks, and bullshit walks.
Fast forward to last June. Michelle Rodriguez aka Letty posts an Instagram that basically said she will leave the series if the women of the series don’t get bigger parts. We already had no Mia because of Paul Walker’s tragic death. You can’t have Dom without Letty. Can’t and won’t have it. This should be fixed.
Now, enter Roman Pearce aka Tyrese. If there’s one person who does NOT like Dwayne Johnson right now, it’s Tyrese. It’s ironic because their personal life mirrors their on-screen characters. This all stems from the rumors of The Rock getting a spinoff movie for his character, Luke Hobbs. This has been in talks for awhile now. That’s nothing new, but it sounds like the Rock wanted to push it up because of his busy schedule instead of waiting until the series was over. Hence, Tyrese begging him not to make the spinoff.
That’s the first domino. Then, just 2 days ago, Fast 9 was pushed back one year from 2019 to 2020. At first, I thought it was just to drag this out because they had to figure out where to go storyline wise. However, that was clearly NOT the case.
The dominoes did not just fall. They collapsed. Enter Tyrese who went HAM on social media, hinting that the spinoff was coming and he blamed the Rock.
Then, last night, the spinoff was confirmed. The Rock and Jason Statham are getting their own movie in 2019.
Tyrese was…not happy! In his mind, the family has broken up.
Vin Diesel with a “brotherhood” post.
Fast fans, this franchise is in TROUBLE. I really don’t know where I stand. I honestly thought Vin and Dwayne put the past behind him after the success of Fast 8, but there were clearly more problems behind the scenes. I think Tyrese would actually fight The Rock if he saw him in person. I’m super interested in what The Rock has to say. I’m a Rock guy so I don’t know where I stand. On one hand, the Rock is a main reason why this franchise was resurrected after he debuted in Fast 5 aka the best one. So he does deserve a spinoff for sure. However, I do believe spinoffs should happen when a series is over, not during a triology especially if it involves major characters.
All I know is this family needs to watch the ending scene to Fast 7 and remember that these movies are for Paul. Paul brought them all together and they need to remember that families stick together. Grab some coronas, throw some chicken on the grill, and have a Toretto BBQ. It’s only 2017 so the spinoff would not start filming until 2018 and Fast 9 would film in 2019. Time heals all wounds, and I’m hoping this wound will be sealed shut.
Brothers fight, but they’re still brothers.
